Elementary Circle
Announcements
- There will be no class on February 22, since many local schools are on break. In addition, there will be no class on March 28 and no class on April 11.
- Starting on January 11, 2012, the Elementary Group will have one class that meets from 6:30 - 7:20 and is appropriate for third and fourth graders. Students in first and second grade who know multiplication can also attend with the instructors' consent.
- Each child should bring a small pencil case with a few pencils, markers or colored pencils, an eraser, a glue stick, and scissors with rounded edges. In addition, students should bring a quad notebook, which is a notebook containing pages of graph paper instead of lined paper.
Program
Starting on January 11, 2012, the Marin Math Circle will offer an Elementary Circle recommended for students in grades 3 and 4. The main purpose of this group is to expose children to fun mathematical problems and ideas so that they develop a positive attitude towards math. The program will be interactive, and sessions may include experiments, storytelling, manipulatives, guided discussions, independent work, and work in teams. The Marin Math Circle is intended for students who are good at math and like working on challenging problems.
The Elementary Circle meets from 6:30 - 7:20 pm on Wednesday evenings during the school year in Alemany Library Room 207 on the campus of Dominican University. The first class of 2012 is on January 11. The program is limited to 25 students with two instructors.
Registrations will be accepted on a first come, first served basis until capacity is reached. To register please fill out the Elementary Circle registration form. If the classes are full, new registrations will be put on a wait list and contacted when space opens up.

About the Instructors
| Laura Givental graduated from a math and physics high school and obtained her Bachelors and Masters Degrees in applied mathematics at the Moscow school "Kerosinka". She has designed and led a very successful program for elementary students in the Berkeley Math Circle since Fall 2009, and she also leads an elementary circle at the Stanford Math Circle. In addition to her work in mathematics education, Laura works a software engineer and consultant. |

| Ilya Zakharevich received his PhD in mathematics in 1990 in Moscow. He moved to the US in 1990 and to Berkeley in 2001. He has taught mathematics on and off since 1981, and he currently teaches in the Berkeley Math Circle Elementary Program. |
